This elaborate assortment of mythical creatures frequently surrounds Buddha images. One of each plane – aquatic, terrestrial, and aerial – they evoke Nature's acceptance of Shakyamuni as a truly enlightened being, conveyed throughout his hagiography. These creatures also function as mythic guardians, with toranas like the present often appearing above openings to sacred spaces to prevent the invasion of polluting elements.

Garuda is a half-bird, half-human creature that appears in both Hinduism and Buddhism. In Hinduism, Garuda is the mount of the god Vishnu and the sworn enemy of the Naga serpent. As a symbol of supremacy, this bird-king demonstrates the harmony between power and grace, creating a magical figure of strength and heroism.

Literature comparison:
Compare a related upper section of a torana, dated 1810, in the collection of the Rubin Museum, object number C2003.21.3. Compare a related example published in Ghose (ed.), Vanishing Beauty: Asian Jewelry and Ritual Objects from the Barbara and David Kipper Collection, Chicago, 2016, p.72, fig.65. Similar toranas can be found above multiple entrances of the Changu Narayan temple in Nepal.

Auction result comparison:
Type: Closely related
Auction: Bonhams Hong Kong, 2 October 2018, lot 121
Estimate: HKD 160,000 or approx. EUR 21,000 converted and adjusted for inflation at the time of writing
