Lot details

Please note this Lot is to be sold at No Reserve.

China, 18th - 19th century. The rock with many conglomerate layers of various colors dominated by red, cream, gray, and black, the distinct striations and resulting stark contrasts give the stone an attractive and somewhat mystic appearance. Consistent naturally grown patina overall.

Provenance: From a private collection in Massachusetts, USA, mostly formed during the 1990s.
Condition: Good condition with some wear, signs of weathering and erosion, natural fissures and inclusions, possibly small losses which have smoothened over time.

Weight: 6,522 g (excl. stand)
Dimensions: Height 36 cm (excl. stand) and 39 cm (incl. stand)

With a fitted wood stand dating to the later 20th century. (2)

Literature comparison:
Compare a related scholar’s rock of similar red color, dated to the early 19th century, in the collection of the Minneapolis Institute of Art, accession number 98.81.2.
