A MUGHAL CARVED CRYSTAL VESSEL AND COVER, PIKDAN, 17TH-18TH CENTURY

Sold for €715

including Buyer's Premium

Lot details

India. Finely carved from translucent white quartz, most likely rock crystal. The lobed globular body supported on a spreading foliate foot and surmounted by the broad flared rim similarly divided into numerous lobes. The body and rim are neatly carved with pendent and upright leaves to each lobe. The cover densely carved with overlapping leaves and topped with a similarly decorated knop finial. (2)

Provenance: English trade. A private collection in Vienna, Austria, acquired from the above.
Condition: Good condition with wear and natural imperfections including fissures and inclusions. Scattered small nicks and minuscule nibbling. One chip to the cover. Remnants of adhesive.

Weight: 752.1 g
Dimensions: Height 12.5 cm

Crystal “Pikdan” spittoon vessels such as the present lot are rare and would have been highly prized by the Mughal court. From the mid-eighteenth century the bulbous bowl and flanged rim gave way to a double bell-shaped form, as seen in a glass example in the al-Sabah Collection (see Stefano Carboni, Glass from Islamic Lands, Kuwait National Museum, 2001, cat. no. 105).

Literature comparison:
Compare a related Mughal rock crystal bowl and cover, 17.8 cm high, formerly in the collection of Florence and Herbert Irving and now in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, object number 2015.500.5.92a, b. Compare a related Mughal rock crystal spouted vessel and cover, dated to the 18th century, in the Victoria & Albert Museum, accession number 01352(IS).
