A CELADON-GLAZED JAR, SUI TO TANG DYNASTY

Lot details

China, 581-907. The massively potted globular vessel is raised from a circular, sprawling foot towards a short cylindrical neck. The shoulders with four double-looped handles. A crackled pale celadon glaze covers the upper half of the jar entirely, thus revealing the buff ware below.

Provenance: Collection of George de Menasce. Spink & Son, May 1971, no. 19. Old Spink & Son label, ‘G. de Menasce Collection, no. 19’ to base. George de Menasce (1890-1967) was born in Liverpool, where the Menasce family had cotton interests. His father, Baron Félix de Menasce, was a banker with Austro-Hungarian links. During the Second World War, George gave open house piano concerts in his home in Moharrem Bey, attended especially by British servicemen, for which he was awarded an OBE. After inheriting his mother’s fortune, he began to build a substantial art collection with a strong focus on Chinese porcelain. He was a member of the Oriental Ceramic Society from 1948 and served on the Council.

Condition: Minor old repairs to lip, some chips to foot, extensive traces of use, some glaze loss here and there, overall as expected and good condition commensurate with age.
