Tibet. Finely cast, the domed body rising from a double-lotus frieze with beaded rim to a stepped harmika, surmounted by a tapered parasol and a lotus bud finial. The base sealed, the plate incised with the Eight Buddhist Emblems encircling a central gankyil.
Provenance: From an old private collection in Hessen, Germany. An Austrian collector, acquired from the above.
Condition: Very good condition with minor wear, traces of use, casting irregularities, small nicks, light surface scratches, the base slightly warped, remnants of pigment, encrustations.

This type of stupa is associated with the famed Indian monk Atisha, who founded the Kadampa sect in Tibet. Another example is held in the Jacques Marchais Museum of Tibetan Art, see Lipton & Ragnubs, Treasures of Tibetan Art, New York, 1996, p. 46, no. 5.
