China, 1644-1912. Well-carved, the wings of the animal folded against its body, the plumage meticulously rendered, and its head distinguished by a pair of bulging eyes and a prominent beak. The bird perched on a rock, carved in openwork, with lingzhi fungus, clutching a small rodent with its right talon. The stone of a vivid emerald-green tone with intense dark green patches and veining.
Provenance: Collection of Ivan Traugott, no. 1301, thence by descent. Ivan Traugott (1871-1952) was a Swedish entrepreneur and a distinguished collector of Asian art in the early twentieth century. He became an early member of the China Club and a close associate of Johan Gunnar Andersson, the eminent Swedish archaeologist and sinologist celebrated for his seminal contributions to the study of prehistoric and ancient Chinese art. Through his patronage and deep engagement with Eastern material culture, Traugott played a pivotal role in advancing the study and appreciation of Asian art within leading cultural institutions in Sweden. Substantial portions of the collection are preserved today in the holdings of the National Museum and the East Asian Museum in Stockholm. The base inscribed ‘1301’.
Condition: Excellent condition with minimal wear and natural irregularities to the stone. Minor remnants of adhesive to the underside.
