Lot details

China, 18th century. The shallow vessel is naturalistically carved in the form of a large lingzhi fungus, its foliate ruyi-shaped rim terminating in a pair of opposing volute scrolls. The underside is richly decorated in relief with gnarled branches issuing neatly incised leaves, while three smaller lingzhi emerge in low relief among gracefully twisting vines, their stems rendered with delicate precision. The translucent celadon stone is accented with brown mottling and cloud-like inclusions.

Provenance: From a private collection in California, United States.
Condition: Good condition with expected wear, traces of use, minuscule nibbling, tiny nicks, and natural fissures, some of which have developed into small hairline cracks.

Weight: 214 g
Dimensions: Length 14.5 cm

The lingzhi fungus (Ganoderma lucidum), also known as the mushroom of immortality, has held deep symbolic significance in Chinese culture for over two millennia. Associated with longevity, it appears frequently in Daoist lore, imperial art, and scholar's objects. Regarded as a sacred plant believed to grow in the realms of immortals, the lingzhi became a popular motif in decorative arts, symbolizing a long life.
