Jade. China, Han dynasty, 206 BC – 220 AD
The stone is carved as a recumbent pig with a flat snout and pointed ears. It is decorated with deep, slanting grooves that delineate the front and rear legs which are tucked underneath the body. This design is a characteristic of the Han period. The elongated tubular carving with a flat base, the head with articulated nose, above the straight-cut stern is a tiny tail. The stone is of a celadon tone with russet veins and cloudy-white inclusions.
Compare a closely related celadon jade pig dated to the Eastern Han at Christie’s Hong Kong in Important Chinese Ceramics and Works of Art on 29 May 2019, lot 3172, sold for HKD 150,000.
LENGTH 11 cm
Provenance: Austrian private collection.
