Lot details

Tibetan-Chinese. Heavily cast and finely modeled seated in dhyanasana on a double-lotus base with beaded rim, the hands held in bhumisparsha mudra, clad in voluminous robes, the folds of which pool below the ankles, the hems meticulously incised with floral and geometric patterns, and the serene face is surmounted by the ushnisha, which is topped with a conical finial.

Provenance: From a private collection in Dorset, United Kingdom.
Condition: Overall good condition with expected wear and manufacturing irregularities, including scattered copper casting patches. One finger lost and four anciently restored in copper. Minor dents, nicks, light surface scratches, and traces of gilding. The base unsealed. The bronze bears a smooth, naturally developed lustrous patina with areas of verdigris, and displays superbly.

Weight: 1.3 kg
Dimensions: Height 17.7 cm

Expert’s note:
The figure is meticulously inlaid with numerous, mostly minuscule copper plaques in rectangular and circular shapes, often referred to as casting patches, with notable placements on the shoulder and back. These plaques may have once served a ritual purpose and are frequently observed in Buddhist sculptures.
