China, 16th to 17th century. The Goddess of Mercy is shown seated in rajalitasana on a rockwork base, wearing an elaborate tiara and loose robes open at the chest to reveal a necklace, her oval face with downcast eyes centered by an urna and with bow shaped lips. The surface with red lacquer above gilt.
Provenance: From a private collection in the United States. The base with a label ‘Wood carved figure. Chinese 1600-1630'.
Condition: Good condition with some wear, expected minor age cracks, few chips and losses. The lacquer gilding consists of several layers from different periods and shows old wear, weathering, and flaking. Overall displaying exceptionally well.
