China, 1368-1644. Cast seated in dhyanasana with hands folded in dhyana mudra above the lap, dressed in loose robes finely incised with foliate hems, the chest exposed and with the wan symbol, the full face with downcast eyes centered by an urna, lips forming a gentle smile, flanked by pendulous earlobes, beneath tight whorls of hair covering the ushnisha fronted by an oval cudamani. The hair lacquered in blue.
Provenance: Collection of Enno Paul Bracklo. Koller Auctions, Zurich, 28 November 2023, lot 221. European private collection, acquired from the above. Dr. jur. Enno Paul Bracklo (1886-1963) was a German diplomat who was active in the German consulates in Shanghai, Hangzhou, and Qingdao from 1909 onwards. From December 1923 his official title was consul. He and his family lived in China until 1947, when they returned to Germany.
Condition: Very good condition with little wear, casting irregularities, remnants of gilt and lacquer, nicks, small losses, and light surface scratches.
