Unsigned, the blade attributed to Shimada
Japan, the blade early 16th century, Muromachi period (1333-1573), the mounting Edo period (1615-1868)
The blade:
The sugata is hira-zukuri with iori mune, forged in itame hada with a flamboyant choji midare hamon with pronounced nioi and some ashi. The blade with horimono to each side, one with gomabashi and the other with a ken sword terminating in a groove. The nakago with one mekugi-ana and a kuri jiri. The gilt-metal habaki with diagonal file marks.
The mounting:
The iron tsuba of mokko gata form, with two hitsu, and finely worked to each side with a ferocious dragon amid swirling clouds. The parcel-gilt copper fuchi decorated with a band of prunus blossoms. The tsuka covered in rayskin and wrapped with dark-blue textile. The parcel-gilt and silvered metal menuki in the form of karashishi. The saya lacquered with lustrous roiro.
With an NBTHK Kicho (‘Precious’) certificate attributing the blade to Shimada from the Koto period.
NAGASA 29.8 cm, LENGTH 58.5 cm (the koshirae)
Condition: Overall good condition with minor wear, the blade with a tiny shallow chip near the tang, some ware, little fukure, the saya with minor age cracks and light scratches.
