China, 1644-1912. Well carved holding a gnarled staff and wearing long robes falling to the ground in soft pleats, depicted with his characteristic prominent cranium, a long beard, and calm smiling expression. He is surrounded by young attendants who are of much smaller size than the God of Longevity, one held aloft in his arms, while another opens a pomegranate with a knife and a third carries a large vase filled with blossoming peony flowers.
Provenance: Austrian private collection. The base of the figure inscribed with an old collector’s number, ‘[…] 14956’.
Condition: Very good condition with minor wear, few tiny chips and nibbles to edges, few small age cracks, light surface scratches.
