The gourd (hulu) is a powerful symbol of blessings, longevity, and protection, in Chinese art history. It is associated with prosperity and infinity, and its many seeds represent fertility and abundant descendants. In Daoist tradition, immortals often carry gourds filled with elixirs of life, reinforcing its connection to health and spiritual transcendence. Whether depicted alone or alongside auspicious symbols like bats or butterflies, the gourd remains an enduring emblem of good fortune and longevity in Chinese culture today.
