School of Tomohisa or Mototada, unsigned
Japan, Kyoto, 18th century, Edo period (1615-1868)
Boldly carved from a large branch-section of antler, depicting Bashiko sennin sitting atop a rock with two dragons coiling beneath him and a third emerging from his alms bowl. The face of the elderly sage is stern, his brows are furrowed, and his lips upturned as he looks upwards. The porous material is stained, and the eyes are inlaid in dark horn. Himotoshi to the back.
HEIGHT 6.2 cm
Condition: Good condition with minor wear, natural flaws, small nick to the emerging dragon, and one dark-horn inlay replaced.
Provenance: The Gabor Wilhelm collection, Paris.
