Japan, 17th century
The netsuke repurposed from a colonial ivory figure of a man seated on a bed of leaves with one knee raised as he looks in the distance contemplating, dressed in a short loincloth, the youthful face with a mirthful expression, framed by finely incised hair issuing curls. Generously excavated himotoshi to the back and through the underside. The ivory with a smooth, naturally grown patina.
HEIGHT 5.7 cm, LENGTH 4.6 cm
Condition: Good condition with wear commensurate to age and natural imperfections including age cracks. Few scattered nicks and scratches. One nerve channel to the back plugged. One toe restored.
Provenance: The Gabor Wilhelm Collection, Paris.
This rare type of ivory carving was likely imported by the Portuguese from Macau during the 17th century, where it then was converted into a toggle.
