Japan, early Meiji period (1868-1912), second half of 19th century. The fringe of a later date.
The pole topped with a polychrome papier-mâché figure of a shôjô, a red-faced, red-haired sea spirit known for its love of alcohol, dancing with a fan atop a large, slightly tilted gilt sake jar (tsubo). The figure is set on a platform adorned with long brown leather and green felt fringe and carried on a long black lacquered ribbed pole, with an iron pole end. The shôjô and platform are detachable from the pole.
HEIGHT 204.7 cm (in total), and 12 cm (the shôjô)
Condition: Overall good condition with traces of use and wear, surface scratches, and few tiny nicks here and there. The shôjô with flakes to the paint, touch-ups, and one hand reattached.
Uma-jirushi, or "horse signs," were battlefield markers used during Japan's Sengoku period. Mounted on long poles, they were placed by a horse or in the main camp to mark the position of a key military commander.
