Japan, second half of the 19th century

The large red leather tobacco pouch adorned with an unusual and large kanamono, exquisitely crafted in iron and sentoku in the shape of a Tanegashima teppo (matchlock rifle). Attached to the pouch is a large wood and sentoku ashtray netsuke. The ensemble is connected by three linked silver chains and an ojime.

HEIGHT 9.5 cm (the pouch), LENGTH 14 cm (the pouch), HEIGHT 27.4 cm (total)

Condition: Very good condition. Minor typical wear and crackling to the pouch. Typical traces of use to the ashtray netsuke.
Provenance: Ex-collection of Dr. Reinhard Lohrberg (1943-2024), Hanover.

The Tanegashima teppo was a Japanese matchlock firearm, introduced to Japan by Portuguese traders in 1543 on the island of Tanegashima, from which it takes its name. This firearm revolutionized samurai warfare, gradually replacing traditional weapons like the bow and spear. The Japanese adapted and refined the design, producing highly decorated matchlocks with intricate metalwork and lacquered stocks. Though eventually phased out with the modernization of weaponry in the 19th century, it remains an icon of Japan’s feudal era.

We urge you to read through §34-50) to ensure you understand them. These terms are specifically designed to protect all serious and committed buyers from bidding against non-payers who attempt to inflate prices without the intent of paying their auction bills.

Of course, this does not apply to questions concerning shipping, insurance, customs, etc.
  • A sale cancellation of any kind after the fall of the hammer is not possible. The only exception to this fundamental rule is our guarantee of authenticity [the Guarantee].
