Attributed to Awataguchi, unsigned
Japan, 18th century, Edo period (1615-1868)
The naked man visibly struggling, his face amusingly contorted as he ties his loin cloth standing on his tiptoes, holding the cloth underneath his chin while wrapping it beneath and around his leg, pulling it too tight with both hands thereby nipping him in a tender spot. The face with a distressed expression, the mouth wide open as he yelps out in anguish. Generously excavated himotoshi to the back.
HEIGHT 9.8 cm
Condition: The feet repaired. Otherwise good condition with expected wear, scattered nicks, and light scratches. The wood with an attractively worn patina.
The traditional fundoshi was twice the length to width and men used their chins to assist in fastening. The expression, "The time when fundoshi was fastened on the chin," means "In older times."
A perennially popular subject, the present netsuke is attributed to a very rare Soken Kisho artist.
