Tibet. Gold and distemper on cloth. Mounted on a silk brocade frame. Depicting blue Vajravarahi in a dancing pose trampling on a prostrate figure atop a lotus pedestal, backed by a flaming mandorla, dressed in a white tiger-skin and billowing shawls, holding a blood-filled kapala in her left hand and a kartika in her right, the khatvanga cradled in her left arm. She is surrounded by pairs of bodhisattvas, wrathful protectors, adepts, and guardians. The reverse with an inscription.
Provenance: From an old private collection in Bavaria, Germany, assembled between 1965 and 1985. The reverse with a wax seal.
Condition: Very good condition with minor wear, little soiling and creasing, the brocade with few loose threads.

Blue Vajravarahi is a rare manifestation of the goddess as the consort of Hayagriva, the horse-headed wrathful emanation of Avalokiteshvara.
