China, 1644-1912. Well carved in openwork as a body holding a millet stalk and hunching over an upturned furled lotus leaf framed by two lingzhi and a blossoming prunus branch, the underside neatly detailed, the translucent stone of a white tone with cloudy inclusions, russet patches and veins, and few dark gray specks.
Provenance: French trade. By repute acquired in the local auction market in Lyon, France.
Condition: Very good condition with some old wear and few natural inclusions and fissures, some of which have developed into thin hairline cracks.
Weight: 204 g
Dimensions: Length 12.1 cm
Jade carvings of boys and lotus were very popular during the Ming dynasty. One of the words for lotus (lian) is a pun for “continuous” and the boy implies the wish for a son. The two together form the rebus liansheng guizi (may you continuously give birth to distinguished sons).
