China, 1279-1644. Finely carved in the round as a recumbent boy, lying in a relaxed posture with his legs crossed, his head resting against his right hand grasping the stems of a lotus bud and leaf, wearing a tunic over trousers, his face with a cheerful expression and neatly detailed features.
The translucent stone is of a very pale celadon-white tone with cloudy inclusions and minute specks of russet skin particularly to the lotus leaf.
Provenance: From a French private collection.
Condition: Excellent condition with minor wear and natural imperfections including fissures, some of which may have developed into small hairline cracks.
Weight: 74.7 g
Dimensions: Length 6.9 cm
Jade carvings of boys holding a lotus leaf were very popular during the Ming dynasty. One of the words for lotus (lian) is a pun for “continuous” and the boy implies the wish for a son. The two together form the rebus liansheng guizi (may you continuously give birth to distinguished sons). In the present carving the lapidary has cleverly used the skin of the stone to highlight the lotus leaf.
