The Dutchman depicted in a characteristic manner with an elongated body, grotesque expression, curled hair, and a large hat, holding a long-tailed cockerel (onagadori) in both hands, the boots with black horn-inlaid studs to the back. Two large asymmetrical himotoshi to the back. The details all very finely carved, the ivory bearing a warm, yellowish patina.

Condition: Very good condition with minor wear. Replacements and losses to the inlaid boot studs.
Provenance: Ex-collection Marcel Lorber (1900-1986). Zacke, Japanische Netsuke, Inro und andere Sagemono - Ausstellung 1986, no. 85. From an Austrian private collection, acquired from the above.
Dutch merchants were the only Europeans permitted to live in Japan during most of the Edo period (1615-1868). They were confined to Dejima, a small man-made island in Nagasaki Bay. The “Southern Barbarian” (Nanban) Dutchman netsuke were developed at a time when few Japanese had encountered foreigners. The cock is a possible reference to the Dutch colony’s pastime of cockfighting.
