Japan, 17th-18th century, Edo period (1615-1868)
Superbly modeled as a pine tree trunk, its interior generously excavated and finely carved to the exterior with branches of pine and pierced hollows. The larger of the two hollows inhabited by a pair of mischievous monkeys while the other provides shelter for a small toad which curiously pokes its head out of its sanctuary. Natural himotoshi. The coconut superbly stained and polished to enhance its grain.
HEIGHT 7.3 cm
Condition: Good condition with wear and natural imperfections. Scattered nicks and scratches. Repairs with associated fills to one section of the branch.
It is likely that the present netsuke was originally of Chinese origin and subsequently converted into a netsuke in Japan, sometime during the 17th to 18th century.
