Japan, late 19th century, Meiji period (1868-1912)
Of muso-zutsu form, carved from ebony wood and finely inlaid with gold. The surface is beautifully engraved with a kebori magnolia branch and gold-inlaid blossoms that extend to the reverse. With a gold and shakudo rim and cord attachment. Signed to the lower part KAITO within a gold-inlaid plaque.
LENGTH 19 cm
Condition: Excellent condition with only age-related minor wear.
Although Kaito does not seem to be recorded, he appears to have been very skilled in both wood carving and metalwork.
