Japan, Edo (Tokyo), mid-19th century, Edo period (1615-1868)

Of circular form, the two-part manju finely carved to one side in shishiaibori (sunken relief) and sumi (ink) details with Oniwakamaru about to slay the giant carp with his knife. The reverse depicting crashing waves with dew drops and signed to the left KOUNSAI.

DIAMETER 4.7 cm

Condition: Good condition with minor wear, light surface scratches, and losses to the inlays. Fine honey-yellow patina.
Provenance: The Gabor Wilhelm Collection, Paris.

Oniwakamaru or ‘young devil child’ was the nickname given to the young warrior monk Musashibo Benkei (1155-1189) because of his enormous strength and violent nature. This netsuke shows the young boy attacking and slaying the giant red carp that swallowed his mother.
