China, 1368-1644. Well sculpted as an applique in the form of a recumbent horse with the legs tucked in. The head is turned backwards with the neatly incised mane falling on either side of the arched neck, and the tail is flicked onto the left rear haunch. Four apertures are pierced through the slightly hollowed and black-lacquered reverse. The opaque stone is of a gray color with black patches and veins.
Provenance: Christie's Los Angeles, 7 May 1999, lot 65, (sold for USD 3,450 or approx. EUR 5,700 converted and adjusted for inflation at the time of writing). A private collection in the United Kingdom, acquired from the above.
Condition: Very good condition with minor wear and carving irregularities. Minuscule nibbling, and natural fissures, some which may have developed into small hairline cracks.
