Lot details

Expert’s note: Echoing bronze vessels of ancient periods, this jade censer is remarkable for how the lapidary skillfully utilized the mottled spinach-green stone with all its natural inclusions and veining. The result now bears a striking resemblance to the patina found on ancient bronze gui from the Shang and Zhou dynasties. What could be more fitting than using this rare material, with precisely these inclusions, to create a vessel inspired by those very bronzes?

China, 19th century. Finely carved in a deep, rounded gui form, raised on a flared foot and flanked by two upright rectangular handles. An archaistic band of Taotie encircles the exterior of the bowl, carved in deep relief. The semi-translucent stone is of a deep spinach green, flecked with dark specks, russet veins, and cloudy inclusions.

Provenance: By repute acquired by an American couple during the 1970s at Parke-Bernet, New York, and thence by descent. A European private collector, acquired from the above via the US trade.
Condition: Excellent condition with minor old wear and minuscule nibbling. Natural fissures and inclusions.

Weight: 862 g (excl. base), 1,123 g (incl. base)
Dimensions: Width 22.2 cm, Height 10.7 cm (excl. base), 19 cm (incl. base)
