A PARCEL-GILT COPPER REPOUSSÉ BUDDHIST RITUAL CONTAINER, NEPAL, 16TH-17TH CENTURY

Lot details

Separately worked in stackable sections, some finely pierced, each intricately chased with ornate decoration. The splayed foliate foot encircled by six three-lobed lidded containers, each with a lid depicting a central multi-armed tantric deity standing within a foliate arch surrounded by numerous intertwined snakes forming a protective hood, the sides with foliate panels enclosing winged apsaras with hands folded in anjali mudra flanked by mythical beasts and further panels with flowers and butterflies.

The waisted foliate mid-section with six plaques depicting crowned bodhisattvas standing in tribhanga with the right hand held at the chest in abhaya mudra and the left raised clutching a canopy of lotus buds, surmounted by a compressed element decorated with kirtimukha masks surrounded by bats enclosed by lobed panels against a ground of scrolling foliage framed by lotus petal and floral bands, topped with a jewel-form finial plaque of crowned Buddha Amitabha seated in dhyanasana atop a lotus throne, his hands lowered in dhyana mudra holding an alms bowl, backed by an arched mandorla and nimbus surrounded by foliage.

Provenance: Italian trade. Acquired from a private estate in northern Italy.
Condition: Good condition with old wear, traces of use, manufacturing irregularities, some elements loose, light warping, small dents, few minor losses, rubbing and losses to gilt.

Compare a related gilt copper repousse vase of longevity with numerous similar motifs and elements including the finial depicting Buddha Amitabha, dated 17th century, 78.7 cm high, in the Art Institute of Chicago, accession number 1995.202.

Once you have pre-registered for a live online auction, you can see your intended spend and bid limit by going to 'Account Settings' and clicking on 'Live Bidding Registrations'. 

Your bid limit will be the maximum amount you can bid during the auction. Your bid limit is for the hammer price and is not affected by the buyer’s premium and VAT.  For example, if you have a bid limit of €1,000 and place two winning bids for €300 and €200, then you will only be able to bid €500 for the rest of the auction. If you try to place a bid that is higher than €500, you will not be able to do so.
