A FAMILLE ROSE FIGURE OF A PHOENIX, 19TH CENTURY
十九世紀粉彩鳳凰

Sold for €1,040

including Buyer's Premium

Lot details

China. Perched on a rockwork base issuing lingzhi, the head turned slightly to the side, the body covered in polychrome plumage molded in relief, with a red comb and wattle, the beak ajar revealing the tongue, the right leg tucked underneath the body, the left leg standing, the pierced rock glazed in various shades of green.

Provenance: New York trade.
Condition: Excellent condition with minor old wear. Some firing flaws and manufacturing irregularities.

Weight: 3,368 g
Dimensions: Height 43.8 cm

Expert’s note: Note the finely molded plumage of the bird draped along the neck and backside of the base, which is further accentuated by the vivid and colorful enamels. Each feather on the neck appears to be separately molded, carved, and applied, and the plumage on the back is individually cut to present a dynamism and movement that is striking. The exceptional quality of the decoration may indicate that this phoenix was made already during the later 18th century.
