Japan, early 19th century, Edo period (1615-1868)

Of rectangular form, finely and deeply engraved to one side with a goose flying above a stream with reeds, inscribed to the left Hanabusa Itcho e [painting of Hanabusa Itcho], the reverse with another goose standing at a pond. Signed to the underside JOSEN with a kakihan.

HEIGHT 5.4 cm, LENGTH 7.3 cm

Condition: Very good condition with minor wear and traces of use.
Provenance: With Sydney Moss Ltd., London. An old collector’s number ‘43’ to the interior.

Josen worked in the early 19th century and produced a number of inro with engraved designs some adapted from works by the celebrated painter and illustrator Hanabusa Itcho (1652-1724).

After the auction, Zacke will not answer questions from bidders unless the purchase price has been paid in full. Of course, this does not apply to questions concerning shipping, insurance, customs, etc.
  • A sale cancellation of any kind after the fall of the hammer is not possible. The only exception to this fundamental rule is our guarantee of authenticity [the Guarantee].
  • A Guarantee Claim, however, can only be raised after the purchase price has been paid in full by the buyer and within 45 days after the auction day.
