Of elongated rectangular form with oval section, finely worked in gold and silver takamaki-e and hiramaki-e as well as kirigane flakes on a gold ground with areas of mura-nashiji, featuring a continuous scene with three cranes in flight below misty clouds. The interior of the compartments of nashiji, decorated with grasses and butterflies, and with gold fundame rims. The underside with the gold-lacquered signature INABA saku.
HEIGHT 8.6 cm, LENGTH 4.4 cm
Condition: Good condition with minor wear, few tiny nibbles along the rims, little rubbing along the edges.
Provenance: The McHenry Collection, Sacramento, California, United States. Anne and Malcolm McHenry were great philanthropists and art enthusiasts who supported their local art museum, the Crocker.
Inaba is the family name of a line of lacquer artists who produced inro during at least the 18th and 19th centuries. See E. A. Wrangham (1995) The Index of Inro Artists, p. 90.
