Lot details

The netsuke by Tadatoshi, signed Tadatoshi 忠利
Japan, late Edo period (1615-1868)

Of upright, lenticular form and oval section, decorated in iro-e hiramaki-e and takamaki-e, as well as kirigane, to depict a hilly landscape with a meandering river, dotted with several pavilions, thatched huts, and verdant pines. The interior compartments of nashiji with gold fundame rims.

With a swirled glass ojime most probably of Italian origin. The ivory netsuke in the form of kneeling karako, dressed in voluminous vines, putting on his shoe. Signed to the base of the sole TADATOSHI.

HEIGHT 7.9 cm (inro), 3 cm (netsuke)

Condition: Good condition with wear, especially to the cord runners and edges. Expected losses to kirigane and the lacquer with flaking and rubbing. The netsuke with age cracks and a chip to lower part.
Provenance: From the private collection of Armand Basi. An old collector’s label to the interior inscribed, ‘Takamikie, Kirigane, Netsuke, signert’ and ‘310’. Armand Basi (1924-2009) was a Spanish businessman and fashion designer, co-founder of the fashion firm bearing his name. He was a Japanese art enthusiast and amassed a large collection of netsuke in his lifetime. In 1948, along with his brother Josep, Armand Basi founded a small knitting company inspired by their mother Mercé Sabi's knitted sweaters. By the end of the 1950s the business had expanded into a large textiles company, opening a factory on Balcells Street in Barcelona in 1958. In 1961–62, the Basis signed an exclusive contract with Lacoste to manufacture and distribute Lacoste products in Spain. In 1986, Basi launched his eponymous fashion brand, which produced accessories, perfume, jewelry and watches, as well as clothing in more than 400 stores across Spain, Europe, North America and Asia.

Our Terms and Conditions

As part of our ongoing efforts to keep our auctions fair and transparent, we encourage you to read our terms and conditions thoroughly. We urge you to read through §34-50) to ensure you understand them. These terms are specifically designed to protect all serious and committed buyers from bidding against non-payers who attempt to inflate prices without the intent of paying their auction bills.

For further reading about non-payers at auction, go here: https://www.zacke.at/aboutnonpayers/.

The main points include the following:

  • Bidders must complete their due diligence and clarify all questions about the objects before the auction. After the auction, Zacke will not answer questions from bidders unless the purchase price has been paid in full. Of course, this does not apply to questions concerning shipping, insurance, customs, etc.
  • A sale cancellation of any kind after the fall of the hammer is not possible. The only exception to this fundamental rule is our guarantee of authenticity [the Guarantee].
  • A Guarantee Claim, however, can only be raised after the purchase price has been paid in full by the buyer and within 45 days after the auction day.

If you have any questions about our policies, please get in touch with us at office@zacke.at.

By placing a bid, you agree to our Terms of Auction and Terms and Conditions.
