A RARE TUBULAR CONG-FORM JADE BEAD, LIANGZHU CULTURE

Lot details

China, circa 3300-2200. Of cylindrical form, the two-tiered miniature bead is finely incised with two bands of stylized masks and drilled from both ends. The stone is now opaque and of buff color from alteration.

Provenance: From a private estate in New York City, USA.
Condition: Very good condition with minor wear and few smoothened chips. The stone with natural fissures which have developed into small hairline cracks over time.

Literature comparison:
Two similar beads are illustrated by J. Rawson in Chinese Jade from the Neolithic to the Qing, British Museum, 1995, p. 144, no. 5:11, where the author notes that similar beads have been found in Liangzhu tombs. Another similar bead is illustrated by J. F. So in Chinese Jades from the Cissy and Robert Tang Collection, Art Museum, The Chinese University of Hong Kong, 2015, p. 48, no. 4a. The author, p. 51, notes that the features carved on the bead are typical of Liangzhu jades from Fanshan and Yaoshan, as demonstrated by those in a string of beads found at Yaoshan, Yuhang, Zhejiang province, illustrated in The Complete Collection of Jades Unearthed in China, vol. 8, Beijing, 2005, p. 128.

Your bid limit will be the maximum amount you can bid during the auction. Your bid limit is for the hammer price and is not affected by the buyer’s premium and VAT.  For example, if you have a bid limit of €1,000 and place two winning bids for €300 and €200, then you will only be able to bid €500 for the rest of the auction. If you try to place a bid that is higher than €500, you will not be able to do so.
