AN AGATE PENDANT OF A SQUIRREL WITH PEANUTS, 18TH-19TH CENTURY

Lot details

China. Carved in the form of a squirrel nestled between three peanuts, pierced through the body with two apertures for suspension. The translucent stone of amber-orange tone with areas of an opaque golden-yellow skin.

Provenance: French private collection. Artcurial, Paris, 8 December 2014, lot 75 (part lot). A notable private collector in Kensington, London, United Kingdom, acquired from the above. An old collector’s label, ‘Brown chalcedony – rat & 3 peanuts’, to the base. A copy of the original invoice from Artcurial, dated 9 December 2014 and stating a purchase price for the present lot (together with two further agate pendants and a malachite pendant, all dated to the late Qing dynasty) of EUR 18,200 or approx. EUR 21,500 (adjusted for inflation at the time of writing), accompanies this lot.
Condition: Good condition with minor wear, few minuscule nicks, and light surface scratches.

Weight: 26.7 g (excl. stand) and 40 g (incl. stand)
Dimensions: Length 4.2 cm

With a wood stand dating to the early 20th century. (2)

Your bid limit will be the maximum amount you can bid during the auction. Your bid limit is for the hammer price and is not affected by the buyer’s premium and VAT.  For example, if you have a bid limit of €1,000 and place two winning bids for €300 and €200, then you will only be able to bid €500 for the rest of the auction. If you try to place a bid that is higher than €500, you will not be able to do so.
