Japan, 18th century, Edo period (1615-1868)
Of horizontal rectangular shape, bearing a lustrous brown lacquer ground, decorated with gold takamaki-e and hiramaki-e. The design masterfully depicts dragonflies on each side, their wings and heads finely inlaid with aogai (mother-of-pearl). The interior cases of nashiji and red lacquer with gold fundame rims.
HEIGHT 4.3 cm, LENGTH 7.7 cm
Condition: With a loss to the mother-of-pearl inlay and to one cord hole. Otherwise, good condition with typical age-related wear.
Provenance: Ex-collection Maurice Feuillet (1873-1968) (with an old label to the inside). Sold at his Sale, 23 – 24 June 1938, Paris, lot 84 (with an old label affixed to the upper side). Thierry de Maigret, Archeologie, Arts Asiatiques, Cannes, 11 December 2015, lot 174. French private collection, acquired from the above.
