Japan, 19th century, Edo period (1615-1868)
Of upright rectangular form, with a lustrous roiro ground, finely decorated in gold and red takamaki-e. The design features leafy branches bearing blossoms that grow from a pierced, craggy rock, with the blossoms inlaid in aogai (mother-of-pearl). The interior is finished in e-nashiji, with red and black lacquer and gold fundame rims.
LENGTH 6.4 cm, HEIGHT 8.8 cm
Condition: With expected wear and few shallow surface scratches. With two losses to the aogai inlays, and two dents to the top. Overall presenting well.
Provenance: Drouot, Maurice Rheims Collection, 25-26 November 1952, Paris, lot 80. Ex-collection Maurice Garçon, collection number 194, acquired from the above. An old label pasted to the interior ‘Collection Maurice Garçon 194’. Maurice Garçon (1889-1967) was a French novelist, historian, essayist and lawyer, known for his works ‘Le destin exécrable de Guillemette Babin’ (1948) and ‘Avec André Gide’ (1951) among others.
