China, 19th – early 20th century. Of flattened pear-shaped form raised on a short oval foot with shoulders sloping to a waisted neck with a gilt lip. The body symmetrically decorated on each side with a bronze chime suspended from an iron-red bat, above a stylized lotus spray, surrounded by leafy tendrils bearing flowers. The narrow sides with stylized flowerheads, all reserved on a bright and remarkably even turquoise ground. The neck encircled by interlocking ruyi heads and the foot by a band of scroll.

Provenance: Marsha Vargas, Xanadu Gallery, San Francisco, United States, April 2008. Collection of Kim Green, no. 110, acquired from the above in Los Angeles, USA. A copy of the original collector’s notes for the present lot written by Kim Green, detailing the purchase from Marsha Vargas on 26 April 2008, accompanies this lot. Note that in these collector’s notes, the present lot is dated to the Republic period. Xanadu Gallery was established in 1979 by Marsha Vargas in San Francisco and offers antiquities and art from Asia, Oceania, and Latin America. The gallery continues to this day and is located in the historic Frank Lloyd Wright building off Union Square. Kim Green was a trained geologist and geochemist, serving as director of the Office of the Chief Scientist for the U.S. Department of Agriculture. With her profound understanding and affection for snuff bottles and their unique tactile attributes, she built a deliberately limited and exclusive collection that she cherished intimately.
Condition: Superb condition with minor wear and manufacturing irregularities, includind pitting and dark spots. The base with light scratches. Displaying remarkably well. Matching stopper!

The base with an apocryphal iron-red four-character seal mark Qianlong nianzhi.

The central lotus blossom signifies purity, as it rises unsullied out of muddied water, and the bat (fu) symbolizes good fortune and happiness.

Once you have pre-registered for a live online auction, you can see your intended spend and bid limit by going to 'Account Settings' and clicking on 'Live Bidding Registrations'. 

Your bid limit will be the maximum amount you can bid during the auction. Your bid limit is for the hammer price and is not affected by the buyer’s premium and VAT.  For example, if you have a bid limit of €1,000 and place two winning bids for €300 and €200, then you will only be able to bid €500 for the rest of the auction. If you try to place a bid that is higher than €500, you will not be able to do so.
