A LARGE BRONZE FIGURE OF VAJRABHAIRAVA, GELUG SCHOOL
格魯派大型大威德明王銅像

Lot details

Tibet, 19th to early 20th century. Yamantaka is standing in pratyalidhasana on various divinities and animals atop a lotus base with incised scroll, a flaming mandorla behind him. He embraces his consort with his main hands, each holding a karttrika and kapala. His other thirty-two hands radiate around his body holding various attributes. He wears a beaded apron, mala of severed heads, and jewelry. His bull head displays a ferocious facial expression, six other heads frame the central one and are topped with three more heads surrounded by his flaming hairdo.

Provenance: German trade.
Condition: Very good condition with minor old wear, some traces of use and casting flaws, small nicks, light scratches, minor dents. A small split with associated dent at the lower edge of the base.

Dimensions: Height 29.7 cm

The lotus base with smaller figures is cast separately, the radiating arms of Yamantaka are mounted at the back of the figure, his heads are removable, and the flaming mandorla is inset at the back of the base.

Yamantaka (Sanskrit) or Vajrabhairava (Tibetan) is the "destroyer of death" in Vajrayana Buddhism. Of the several deities in this Buddhist pantheon that are named Yamantaka, the most well-known belongs to the Anuttarayoga Tantra class of deities popular within the Gelug school of Tibetan Buddhism.

Your bid limit will be the maximum amount you can bid during the auction. Your bid limit is for the hammer price and is not affected by the buyer’s premium and VAT.  For example, if you have a bid limit of €1,000 and place two winning bids for €300 and €200, then you will only be able to bid €500 for the rest of the auction. If you try to place a bid that is higher than €500, you will not be able to do so.
