Japan, Meiji period (1868-1912)
Finely potted, the pear-shaped vase surmounted on a splayed foot and rising to rounded shoulders with a short neck and a flared mouth. The body elaborately decorated in polychrome pigments and extensive gilding, some elements in high relief, with a continuous scene depicting a daimyo procession that winds sinuously around the surface. Some figures bearing banners, together with bows and shields, others attired in military regalia, with several mounted on horseback. The scene framed below by a variety of decorative bands, including a key-fret (rinzu) pattern, diaper motifs, and scrollwork, while above two majestic phoenixes (ho-o) soar over the procession against a gilt ground of swirling clouds, enclosed within an additional key-fret band encircling the neck.
HEIGHT 21.9 cm
Provenance: From a private collection in Southern Germany, acquired in the 1950s.
Condition: Obvious signs of breakage with subsequent repairs in gold lacquer. Otherwise, good condition with minor wear and firing irregularities. Light rubbing to gilding and pigments, mostly to the foot and neck, as expected from this type of wares.
