Japan, 19th century, Meiji period (1868-1912)

The first vase of globular form, with the body supported on a short foot and surmounted by a long, straight neck with a narrow mouth. The exterior decorated with polychrome enamels in the classic Imari palette to depict gnarled, blossoming cherry branches. The scene bordered below by a continuous frieze of red pointed leaves and above by a red register of chrysanthemums intertwined with scrolling tendrils, both framed by double blue lines. The upper section surmounted by a further motif of palm leaf tips.

The second vessel with a globular body supported on a short, tapering foot and rising to a long neck with a garlic-head mouth and a lipped rim. The exterior enameled in varying shades of blue and brown, accented with gilt, red, and green hues to depict a peacock and a Kirin among blossoming hibiscuses. The neck further decorated with three colorful medallions with stylized chrysanthemum, hollyhock, and wisteria.

HEIGHT 18.3 and 24.0 cm

Condition: The Imari vase, in overall good condition with wear and firing flaws, including pitting, few cracks, fritting and small shallow chips to the top rim. The Hizen tokkuri vase in very good condition with minor wear, sparse firing irregularities, and light rubbing to gilding and enamels.
Provenance: Private estate, United Kingdom. The art collection, comprising over 100 fine and eclectic Asian works of art, including pieces from China, Japan, and other regions, has been formed primarily 20–30 years ago.

  • Bidders must complete their due diligence and clarify all questions about the objects before the auction. After the auction, Zacke will not answer questions from bidders unless the purchase price has been paid in full. Of course, this does not apply to questions concerning shipping, insurance, customs, etc.
  • A sale cancellation of any kind after the fall of the hammer is not possible. The only exception to this fundamental rule is our guarantee of authenticity [the Guarantee].
  • A Guarantee Claim, however, can only be raised after the purchase price has been paid in full by the buyer and within 45 days after the auction day.
