Japan, mid-19th century, Edo period (1615-1868)
Finely modeled as a shishi seated on its haunches, with one front paw lifted, the lion is intricately detailed with a curled mane, beard, tail, floppy ears, the face is expertly rendered in openwork, capturing a fine expression, while the fur is carefully incised. The piece is covered overall in a bluish-white glaze, except for the underside.

Condition: Overall good condition with minor wear and firing irregularities. There is a small chip to the beard and four claws. It is possible that a brocade ball was once placed under the left paw.
Museum comparison:
Compare an almost identical Hirado okimono of a lion, but conserving the ball, mid-19th century, 19 cm tall, in the Walters Art Museum, accession number 49.1757.

- Bidders must complete their due diligence and clarify all questions about the objects before the auction. After the auction, Zacke will not answer questions from bidders unless the purchase price has been paid in full. Of course, this does not apply to questions concerning shipping, insurance, customs, etc.
- A sale cancellation of any kind after the fall of the hammer is not possible. The only exception to this fundamental rule is our guarantee of authenticity [the Guarantee].
- A Guarantee Claim, however, can only be raised after the purchase price has been paid in full by the buyer and within 45 days after the auction day.
