A GILT MUMMY CASING FRAGMENT DEPICTING A FALCON, LATE PERIOD-PTOLEMAIC ERA

Expert’s note: Originally part of a larger funerary cartonnage, this piece would have adorned a mummy casing, invoking the protective power of the falcon—closely associated with the god Horus and the sun god Ra. The use of gilding not only evoked the brilliance of the sun but also elevated the imagery into the divine realm, linking the owner with eternal life.
Egypt, circa 4th-2nd century BC. The majestic bird, crowned with the solar disk and flanked by protective uraei (sacred cobras), traditional emblems of divine protection, faces a hieroglyphic chen sign symbolizing eternity. The stucco surface is overlaid with gold leaf and set against a crisp red background.
Provenance: Piasa, Paris, 4 May 2011, lot 20. The private collection of Mr. C, Graçay, France. With Arteas Ltd., Paris and London. Property from a Swiss Private Collection, acquired from the above in 2012. A copy of the invoice from Piasa, Paris dated 4 May 2011, and confirming the dating above, accompanies the lot. A copy of the invoice from Arteas Ltd., Paris and London, dated 11 August 2015, confirming the dating and provenance above, accompanies the lot.
Condition: Good condition, commensurate with age. Obvious losses, few loose threads, expected flaking, rubbing to gilt and pigment, old repairs, and reinforcements to the back.

For example, if you have a bid limit of €1,000 and place two winning bids for €300 and €200, then you will only be able to bid €500 for the rest of the auction. If you try to place a bid that is higher than €500, you will not be able to do so.

As part of our ongoing efforts to keep our auctions fair and transparent, we encourage you to read our terms and conditions thoroughly. We urge you to read through §34-50) to ensure you understand them. These terms are specifically designed to protect all serious and committed buyers from bidding against non-payers who attempt to inflate prices without the intent of paying their auction bills.

The main points include the following:
- Bidders must complete their due diligence and clarify all questions about the objects before the auction. After the auction, Zacke will not answer questions from bidders unless the purchase price has been paid in full. Of course, this does not apply to questions concerning shipping, insurance, customs, etc.
- A sale cancellation of any kind after the fall of the hammer is not possible. The only exception to this fundamental rule is our guarantee of authenticity [the Guarantee].
- A Guarantee Claim, however, can only be raised after the purchase price has been paid in full by the buyer and within 45 days after the auction day.
