China, 16th century. Sturdily potted rising from a ring foot to an everted rim. Finely painted in cobalt blue with a central medallion enclosing a single lotus spray, framed by a band bearing the flowers of the four seasons, pomegranate, peony, camelia and chrysanthemum, with a key fret border below the rim, the exterior with 16 radiating petals, the base unglazed.
Provenance: Austrian private collection.
Condition: Extensive old wear and firing flaws such as pitting, brown spots and glaze recesses, surface scratches. The rim with fritting and minor glaze flakes, the foot with three small nicks. Considering the age of this lot, the condition must still be graded as good.
Weight: 500.3 g
Dimensions: Diameter 20 cm
Expert’s note: The present dish, with its precise form, neatly balanced floral decoration and formal key-fret border still embodies both the well-calibrated, often molded shapes and the meticulously painted patterns of the early Ming period, although clearly a work from the 16th century.
