AN IRON-RED 'FIVE CARP' SAUCER DISH, KANGXI PERIOD

Expert’s note: The mark Ruo shen zhen cang may be translated as 'In the collection of Ruoshen' a mark usually associated with the reign period of the Kangxi Emperor.
China, 1662-1722. Brightly painted to the interior with a medallion enclosing a large iron-red carp swimming amid green enameled water weeds, the exterior similarly decorated with four evenly spaced fish in weeds. The recessed base with the neatly painted iron-red four-character mark within a double circle, which is repeated around the foot rim. Further iron-red double circles are found around the rim to both the in- and outside, as well as around the cavetto. A total of five (!) double circles is rather unusual, let alone when they are painted in such fine quality.
Inscriptions: To the base, ‘Ruo shen zhen cang’ (in the collection of Ruoshen).
Provenance: Scottish trade
Condition: Excellent condition with only minor wear and firing irregularities.
