‘THE NINE TIERED PAGODA AT WHAMPOA ANCHORAGE ON PEARL RIVER’, CHINESE SCHOOL, CIRCA 1860

Oil on canvas. Depicting Whampoa Island with the Pazhou Pagoda at the center and two houses to its right. In the foreground a large junk, a smaller cargo ship, and a little ferry boat transporting passengers to the other side of the river. The background with mountains and lush forests.
Inscriptions: In the lower right corner signed in Chinese and additionally with a two-character monogram in Latin letters, all illegible because partly covered by the frame.
Provenance: From the Collection of James E. Breece III, New York, USA, and thence by descent.
Condition: Excellent condition with minor wear, few minuscule touch-ups, the backside with minor foxing. The frame with few nicks and scratches.
Dimensions: Size incl. frame 94 x 65 cm
With a later wood frame.

Once you have pre-registered for a live online auction, you can see your intended spend and bid limit by going to 'Account Settings' and clicking on 'Live Bidding Registrations'.
Your bid limit will be the maximum amount you can bid during the auction. Your bid limit is for the hammer price and is not affected by the buyer’s premium and VAT. For example, if you have a bid limit of €1,000 and place two winning bids for €300 and €200, then you will only be able to bid €500 for the rest of the auction. If you try to place a bid that is higher than €500, you will not be able to do so.
