A FINE AND RARE GILT-BRONZE FIGURE OF PALDEN LHAMO, 18TH-19TH CENTURY

Tibetan-Chinese. Finely carved to depict Shri Devi in her wrathful manifestation, the goddess seated in lalitasana, riding her caparisoned mule across a churning sea of blood neatly incised on the shaped mountain-form base. She holds a blood-filled kapala in her left. Adorned with beaded jewelry around her neck, her face with an enraged expression, marked by bulging eyes, flaming brows, and an open mouth revealing sharp teeth and fangs. The flaming red hair centered by a crescent moon behind the skull tiara.
Provenance: From an Austrian private collection.
Condition: Good condition with minor wear and casting irregularities, rubbing and minor losses to gilt, few minute dents. The flaming hair with remnants of wax. The horse’s belly with a rectangular opening, likely intended to hold sacred relics, with old fills. The base resealed and with remnants of adhesive to the top.

The wrathful form of Shri Lakshmi, Palden Lhamo, which translates to glorious goddess, is the principle female wisdom protector of Tantric Buddhism, as well as the main companion of the enlightened protector Mahakala. She is almost always depicted riding side-saddle atop her mount, the mule, through an ocean of blood.

Your bid limit will be the maximum amount you can bid during the auction. Your bid limit is for the hammer price and is not affected by the buyer’s premium and VAT. For example, if you have a bid limit of €1,000 and place two winning bids for €300 and €200, then you will only be able to bid €500 for the rest of the auction. If you try to place a bid that is higher than €500, you will not be able to do so.
