A BRONZE FIGURE OF BUDDHA SHAKYAMUNI, MING DYNASTY

Lot details

China, 1368-1644. Seated in dhyanasana with his right hand lowered in bhumisparsa mudra and the left lowered above his upturned feet, dressed in long flowing robes opening at the chest, tied at the waist, and cascading in folds. The face with a serene expression marked by heavy-lidded eyes below gently arched brows centered by an urna above full lips forming a subtle smile, flanked by elongated earlobes. The hair arranged in tight curls with an ushnisha.

Provenance: Old Viennese private collection, built over several generations between 1910 and 1975, thence by descent in the same family.
Condition: Very good condition with some wear and casting flaws, minor nicks, dents, losses and scratches, remnants of ancient pigment, the back with distinct file marks. Fine dark patina, the interior with little malachite and cuprite encrustation.

Dimensions: Height 21.5 cm

Expert’s note: The distinct file marks to the back of the figure as well as the remnants of ancient pigment are characteristic of authentic bronzes of the period.

Intended Spend and Bid Limits

When you register to bid in an online auction, you will need to share your intended maximum spending budget for the auction. We will then review your intended spend and set a bid limit for you. Once you have pre-registered for a live online auction, you can see your intended spend and bid limit by going to 'Account Settings' and clicking on 'Live Bidding Registrations'. 

Your bid limit will be the maximum amount you can bid during the auction. Your bid limit is for the hammer price and is not affected by the buyer’s premium and VAT.  For example, if you have a bid limit of €1,000 and place two winning bids for €300 and €200, then you will only be able to bid €500 for the rest of the auction. If you try to place a bid that is higher than €500, you will not be able to do so.
