A REMARKABLE BRONZE TOAD FLASK

Tibet, late 19th century. Imaginatively cast as a large toad holding the flask nozzle in its mouth and with two handles on the sides for suspension, all raised on a flared foot. The creature’s contours and lumpy skin are realistically rendered, and it feels quite similar to the real toad skin when you touch it. The form is unusual and only a few seem to be known in museums, these were probably used by pilgrims of a certain social status to carry water on their journey.

Condition: Overall good condition with traces of age and wear and some nicks here and there.
Provenance: Belgium private collection, acquired in a French auction in 2018.

Weight: 1795 g
Dimensions: Height 29.5 cm

Literature comparison: Compare to a very similar flask at the Norton Simon Museum, accession number P.1998.3.4.

Sold for €4,636

including Buyer's Premium

Intended Spend and Bid Limits

When you register to bid in an online auction, you will need to share your intended maximum spending budget for the auction. We will then review your intended spend and set a bid limit for you. Once you have pre-registered for a live online auction, you can see your intended spend and bid limit by going to 'Account Settings' and clicking on 'Live Bidding Registrations'.

Your bid limit will be the maximum amount you can bid during the auction. Your bid limit is for the hammer price and is not affected by the buyer’s premium and VAT. For example, if you have a bid limit of €10,000 and place two winning bids for €3,000 and €2,000, then you will only be able to bid €5,000 for the rest of the auction. If you try to place a bid that is higher than €5,000, you will not be able to do so.
