A CINNABAR LACQUER ‘PLAYING BOYS’ SEAL PASTE BOX AND COVER, MING DYNASTY
明代剔犀嬰戲圖印泥盒

Lot details

China, 15th-16th century. The domed cover and box are finely carved and incised in relief depicting three playing boys surrounded by rockwork, foliage, and a branch incised with fruit, all set in a diaper ground. The box is decorated with a band of peony blossoms set in a key-fret diaper. The interior and base lacquered in black. The box feels rather heavy in the hand, which indicates a solid metal core.

Provenance: From an old Japanese private collection. British trade, acquired from the above.
Condition: Good condition commensurate with age showing extensive old wear and a few manufacturing irregularities, expected minor age cracks, losses, the interior and base with flaking and cracks to the black lacquer. The cover has a small old repair to a part of the rim and rockwork on one edge.

Once you have pre-registered for a live online auction, you can see your intended spend and bid limit by going to 'Account Settings' and clicking on 'Live Bidding Registrations'. 

Your bid limit will be the maximum amount you can bid during the auction. Your bid limit is for the hammer price and is not affected by the buyer’s premium and VAT.  For example, if you have a bid limit of €1,000 and place two winning bids for €300 and €200, then you will only be able to bid €500 for the rest of the auction. If you try to place a bid that is higher than €500, you will not be able to do so.
